Applicant Requirements: You must be a registered Durham College student to apply for PLAR.

How do students apply? To officially apply for PLAR, you must submit a PLAR Application Form and non-refundable fee, including the original, signed copy of the PLAR Self-Assessment Form.

Fees: Information not available.

Types of PLAR offered: Course specific.

Credit award limits: To graduate with a Durham College credential, you must complete at least 25 per cent of program requirements directly through Durham College. As such, you may PLAR or credit transfer up to 75 per cent of program requirements.

Assessment methods: Comprehensive written examination or test; observation or demonstration of skills; an oral or videotaped presentation; portfolio submission or product assessment; interview.

Steps in PLAR process: Obtain the current course outline for the course to be challenged.

Complete the PLAR Self-Assessment Form. After completing the PLAR Self-Assessment form, students will contact the appropriate school and submit their completed PLAR Self-Assessment Form (the program coordinator/program designate may ask for clarifying information prior to determining applicant eligibility for PLAR). The program coordinator/program designate will advise the student whether the PLAR challenge is successful. Student then submits a PLAR Application Form and non-refundable fee, including the original, signed copy of the PLAR Self-Assessment Form. The school office will arrange for the release of the challenge assessment to the student.

Student support provided: Information not available.

Withdrawing from process: Information not available.

Credit recognition on transcripts: A successful PLAR outcome is graded similarly to the course you are challenging. If the course is a Pass/Fail course, a successful outcome will result in a Pass. If the course is graded numerically, you will receive a numeric grade. As a successful PLAR is recorded in the same manner as credits earned through course work, a numeric PLAR grade will impact your GPA.

Acceptance of other institutions’ PLAR credits: Information not available.
