Applicant Requirements: Applicants must be 19 years of age or older OR have an OSSD or equivalent. The course must be eligible for PLAR (check course outline). At least one year must have elapsed since the last application for PLAR for the course (or this is the first application). The applicant has NOT failed or withdrawn from this course in the last year.

How do students apply? There are three stages to the PLAR application process: Download and complete the PLAR Self-Assessment form. Submit application payment and PLAR waiver and complete PLAR Action Plan. PLAR assessment and award.

Types of PLAR offered: Course specific.

Credit award limits: Prior per learning credit will only be awarded in a degree program for degree-level learning. No more than 50 cent of a degree-level program may be awarded credit through PLAR.

Assessment methods: Examples of “Tasks” may include but are not limited to: work samples, résumé, interview, portfolio, challenge exam and interview, employer letters.

Steps in PLAR process: Complete PLAR self-assessment form. The first step in your PLAR application is to complete a PLAR self-assessment form to determine if you are eligible to apply for PLAR. Review PLAR self-assessment form with PLAR Advisor. All PLAR applicants must review the PLAR self-assessment form with a PLAR Advisor to help determine that they meet the PLAR criteria and the best way to proceed with their PLAR application.  Meet with Program Coordinator. If you meet the PLAR eligibility criteria, your PLAR advisor will add the Program Coordinator information to the self-assessment form and refer you to the Program Coordinator. You will present the Program Coordinator with your self-assessment form. The Program Coordinator reviews the form and determines eligibility with OTR, and recommends if you should pursue PLAR. At least one year must have elapsed since the last application for PLAR for the course (or this is the first application). Program Coordinator signs Self-Assessment form, indicates the name of the Assessor. (The PLAR Assessor may be the Program Coordinator, or another faculty member). Submit Fee Payment and PLAR Waiver form. Create an Action Plan. Working with your PLAR Assessor (or Program Coordinator), you will create an Action Plan. The purpose of the Action Plan is to ensure both applicant and assessor are clear on and agree to the nature of the demonstrations of learning, timelines, content, and process. It should be signed off by both parties and amended, in the same way, as appropriate. Documentation and Transcription. Once the PLAR process is complete, the Program Coordinator and/or Assessor completes information as required on the PLAR application form. The application form (now with the PLAR results) is submitted to the Office of the Registrar, who will update your academic record.

If an ‘F’ grade is awarded, the ‘F’ grade will not be placed on the your Student Record but the application will count as a PLAR attempt. Appeals.

Student support provided: Working with your PLAR Assessor (or Program Coordinator), you will create an Action Plan.

Withdrawing from process: If you apply for PLAR at start of term, and are registered in the course you are challenging, you may not have a response before the last day to withdraw without academic penalty. If you remain in the course, the grade you received in the course will be recorded on your transcript.

Credit recognition on transcripts: Applicants who have successfully completed a PLAR challenge will have the grade recorded on their transcript as per the course outline. Failing grades will not be noted on the transcript. For the purposes of calculation of residency, PLAR credits will not be counted.
