The Government of Ontario’s historic $6.4 billion investment in the province’s postsecondary sector demonstrates a significant commitment to advancing educational opportunities for students at colleges, universities and Indigenous Institutes. I am particularly encouraged by the elements of this announcement that focus on enhancing learner mobility.

The new long-term funding model provides stable and predictable operating funding, increases annual grants and expands in-demand seats. Stability enables institutions to collaborate on pathways, strengthen credit transfer practices and develop joint programs that allow students to move efficiently between credentials and institutions without unnecessary repetition.

The increased base per student funding, including enhanced support for part-time college learners, helps students who are upskilling and reskilling to meet the demands of a rapidly changing labour market. Learner mobility depends on flexible entry and re-entry points, especially for working adults building on prior learning.

As we celebrate Ontario’s new investment in postsecondary education, I’m especially excited about continuing to develop innovative ways to support students on their journey through postsecondary education and into the labour market. Together, we’re paving the way for a more connected and flexible education system — one that recognizes prior learning, supports the growth of innovative programs and prepares graduates for the careers of the future.
