Applicant Requirements: Applicants must be at least 19 years of age, or have earned their Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD). Applicants are not required to enroll in their program of choice before requesting PLAR, but may wish to, particularly if the program is a very popular one.

How do students apply? Contact Student Services who will direct you to the site-designated PLAR staff.

Fees: $102.76 per challenge.

Types of PLAR offered: Course specific.

Credit award limits: You are allowed to gain up to 75% of the credits required for a certificate or diploma program through prior learning. You must complete the remaining 25% of the program requirements by enrolling in classes at Niagara College.

Assessment methods: Assessment may take form of written portfolios, demonstrations, testimonials, tests, projects.

Steps in PLAR process: Complete the Request for Advanced Standing (Prior Learning Assessment Recognition) form and submit it to Services Office at your campus. Use only one form for each PLAR you are requesting. Pay required Prior Learning Assessment Recognition fees to the Student Services Office. Student Services will then direct the student to the College designated PLAR staff member. The Assessor will contact Applicant to set up a time and a location for a personal interview to discuss the PLAR challenge process. Additional demonstration of learning (verbal exam, written exam, practical demonstration, etc.) may be requested of an Applicant. Supplementary assignments may be requested if learning falls short of minimum level of competency for the course. The Assessor may contact references or employers named in the portfolio/client description form to verify sources of documentation. The Applicant certifies that all of the information/documents provided in the portfolio and/or application process are authentic and accurate. The Applicant agrees that the application for credit may be denied if the information is falsified in any way.

Credit recognition on transcripts: Credit obtained through PLAR will be recorded as “CR” on the student’s transcript and will not be factored into the GPA.
